Home | Impact | Black Death Cycle | Symptoms

The Plague had a large effect on Europes' Economy and population. Since there were so many people dying at the time those with certain jobs such as farming became rare. In order to get jobs done normal worker, even those with low skill, were paid high prices to get done a job. Having overpaid workers caused the community to loose money. Also serfs left the land to escape the disease and stopped planting the crops which meant no food.

The plague spread so quickly that a third of Europe was left dead. Monasteries and priests were hit hard because they cared for those with the disease and caught it as well. Nobody had any idea of the cause of the disease but they did have some ideas such as
-Punishment by god
-Poisoned by Jews with water
-Gypsies
-The planets lining up in a certain way
-Blamed on handicapped people
-Poisonous air

The plague was mostly blamed on anyone who was different. Some thing that really did not help the situation was

-No sanitation
-Garbage being dumped out the window
-Cramped living conditions
-Manure in the streets
-Rats everywhere
-Dirty cities
-Sickness everywhere
-Overcrowded cities
